Inspiration
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects many children, yet it often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, causing challenges in their academic and personal lives. The motivation for our project stemmed from the desire to create an accessible and efficient tool that helps identify dyslexia early. Early detection can significantly improve outcomes, enabling children to receive timely interventions and avoid issues like low self-esteem, anxiety, and academic struggles.
What it does
ReadEase aims to detect dyslexia in children early by analyzing their responses to a carefully designed survey and quiz.
Data Collection:
- Collects responses from children to a set of questions assessing their reading, memory, speed, visual, and audio skills.
Machine Learning Analysis:
- Utilizes a machine learning model trained on a dataset of labeled responses to predict whether a child has:
- Severe dyslexia
- Mild dyslexia
- No dyslexia
- Utilizes a machine learning model trained on a dataset of labeled responses to predict whether a child has:
User-Friendly Interface:
- Provides an accessible website where parents or guardians can input the responses and receive predictions about their child's likelihood of having dyslexia.
Time and Cost Efficiency:
- Simplifies the initial screening process, potentially saving families the time and cost associated with formal testing and enabling timely medical consultation if needed.
Awareness and Early Intervention:
- Encourages early detection and intervention, which can improve outcomes for children, helping them overcome challenges in academics, self-esteem, and mental health.
How we built it
Survey and Quiz Creation: We designed a detailed survey and quiz targeted at children, focusing on factors that indicate potential dyslexia. The questions were carefully structured to capture reading, writing, and comprehension patterns.
Database Formation: The answers participants provided formed our database's foundation. This dataset was preprocessed to ensure its quality and relevance for training our ML model.
Machine Learning Model: Using the database, we trained a machine learning model to classify dyslexia severity into three categories:
- Severe Dyslexia
- Mild Dyslexia
- No Dyslexia
Website Integration: We developed a user-friendly website where parents or guardians can input their child’s responses to the survey and quiz. The model predicts the likelihood and severity of dyslexia, allowing users to decide whether to seek professional medical consultation.
Challenges we ran into
Data Collection: Gathering enough reliable and diverse data was a significant hurdle. Ensuring the dataset represented children from various backgrounds and skill levels required extensive effort.
Model Accuracy: Balancing precision and recall in the ML model was a challenge, as missing a diagnosis could have serious consequences. Extensive testing and fine-tuning were required to ensure the model's reliability.
User Accessibility: Designing a website that is both intuitive and engaging for parents without overwhelming them with technical details was another challenge we overcame through iterative testing.

What we learned
Through ReadEase, we gained a deeper understanding of dyslexia and its impact on children and their families. We learned how the brain struggles to connect letters to sounds in dyslexic individuals, making reading a slow and difficult process. This knowledge drove us to explore machine learning (ML) as a solution for early detection. Additionally, we learned the importance of crafting surveys and quizzes that capture relevant data for an accurate diagnosis.
What's next for ReadEase
Some potential next steps for our project to expand its reach, improve accuracy, and make an even greater impact:
1. Expanding the Dataset
- Goal: Improve the ML model's accuracy and generalizability.
- Collect more data from diverse demographics, including children of different age groups, languages, and regions, to ensure inclusivity.
- Partner with schools or organizations to gather anonymized data for training.
2. Enhancing the Machine Learning Model
- Experiment with more advanced ML techniques, such as deep learning (e.g., neural networks) or ensemble models, to boost prediction accuracy.
- Use natural language processing (NLP) to analyze written or verbal responses for deeper insights.
- Implement explainable AI (XAI) techniques to help parents and educators understand why a specific prediction was made.
3. Improving the User Interface and Experience
- Design a more engaging and interactive website for users.
- Add visual aids, progress bars, and intuitive questionnaires tailored for young children.
- Make the platform multilingual to reach a broader audience.
4. Deployment and Accessibility
- Develop a mobile app for easier access and convenience.
5. Integrating Professional Guidance
- Partner with educators, psychologists, and clinicians to provide recommendations or next steps based on the results.
- Add resources like guides, videos, or links to professional help centers for parents.
6. Adding Continuous Learning Features
- Create a self-updating model by collecting anonymous user data (with consent) to improve predictions over time.
- Allow for feedback loops where users can report the accuracy of predictions, helping refine the model.
7. Building Awareness
- Run awareness campaigns about dyslexia and the importance of early detection.
- Collaborate with schools, NGOs, and government organizations to promote the tool.
8. Monetization and Scalability
- Offer a free basic version while providing premium features, like detailed analytics, for a subscription fee.
- Seek funding or grants to scale the project and maintain the platform.
