Inspiration
We are both former teachers who had unique insights into accessibility and inclusion, especially around literacy in America. As former teachers, we are familiar with the common struggle of finding accessible, relevant, and poignant nonfiction texts online. Teachers will often spend a lot of time modifying their own articles for their students. We were inspired to create an easy way for teachers to modify text directly from their browser, meeting the diverse literacy needs of their students. We gathered inspiration from Newsela, AccessiBe, and Grammerly.
What it does
Our Chrome Chrome Extension allows users to find their own nonfiction text from any news or research site, create modifications for specific groups of students, print, and assign to their students. Teachers can adjust text sizing, add or delete text, create vocabulary lists, add comprehension questions, include audio prompts, and more. There are also imbedded settings for specific groups of learners: visual modifications, motor modifications, cognitive modifications, and English Learner modifications.
How we built it
Gina and Stephanie used Miro, Figma, Figjam, and Maze to ideate, analyze, build, and test their product.
Challenges we ran into
The AI connected to these text and visual modifications is advanced and requires an intense and encompassing design system. We'd love to be involved in building this out further, given more time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating something that supports teachers and their students. We have built something that many teachers have a need for, with the ultimate goal of helping students improve their literacy skills in a more engaging way.
What we learned
Design Hackathons are a lot of fun, and a lot of work :) Accessibility requires a lot of time and thoughtful user testing.
What's next for Readable Chrome Extension
We want to explore language AI technologies to integrate with our design. We're open to working with more collaborators, developers, and sponsors!
