Reactr

Inspiration

Hello and welcome to Reactr. In the simplest terms, Reactr is a plugin that allows friends and communities to react to their favorite movies, tv shows, albums, and singles in a way that feels like we’re together. Our project was inspired by the recent increase of using third-party watch party plug-ins on sites like Netflix and Hulu, to connect with friends and family over the pandemic. However, we realized that these products did not account for the busy lives of users, especially when people are now resuming back to in-person agendas. Deciding to develop the Studio Track we wanted to centralize our project around accessibility through capacity.

What it does

Building on the social idea that people enjoy seeing loved ones react to their favorite content, we wanted to find a way to capture that same feeling in micro and macro ways. A place where people could invest in their favorite content and see others react to a favorite TV show, a cliffhanger, groundbreaking music, etc, accessibly in their own time and preference. After users sign up for the software, users can then access the downloadable plug-in on any streaming service website. They can add and join groups with an add codes, where members can view and add updates on the reaction feed to recent episodes watched or songs listened to.

How we built it

We were able to research the existing products, in order to get an idea of what works and what we should expand on in order to make the solution more accessible. After our research, we were able to use the Figma software to construct a prototype that reflected our initial outline.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges our team struggled with were agreeing upon the design interface aspects of the prototype. The plug-in idea came later in our brainstorm. The workload was also higher as our team was also smaller than others.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how seamless the UX design turned out; we drew our inspiration from retro 2000s services like AOL Instant messenger or MySpace.

What we learned

We learned that collaboration can be difficult and that there are many ways to integrate digital services in a way beyond a simple website. As designers, we can often get fixated on only making a website or app, but our solution allowed us to expand our thinking and heavily challenge our design principles.

What's next for Reactr

Moving forward, we hope to develop Reactr into a plugin compatible with Chrome and continue iterating to provide even more content to Reactors as they watch media. Whether this be links to tweets, videos, or even the ability to react with your face, we want to allow users to enjoy a show with their community and feel like they're in a movie theater or sitting around a TV.
