Inspiration
We understand how crucial seconds can be for Thalassemia patients in emergency situations so we came up with the idea for REACT. In these time-sensitive situations, families typically rush to locate paper records, or bystanders hesitate, uncertain of how to assist. We want to close that gap to help reduce anxiety in such scenarios. The bravery of Thalassemia warriors inspires us, and we want to provide them with a tool that is as dependable and resilient as they are.
What it does
REACT is an emergency card that speaks for the patient when they can’t. Patients can carry it in their wallet or as a keychain and when someone scans the QR code or taps (on supported phones), they’re given instant access to the life-saving info that the patient has chosen to share: blood type, allergies, last transfusion date, key contacts, and more. No forms, no delays, no app required.
But REACT is more than a card. It’s also a personal dashboard where the patient or their family can keep health info up to date, track transfusions, and get automatic reminders for the next appointment. It can also be synced with the Google Calendar if they want that. If there’s ever confusion in a crisis, the built-in AI assistant can offer first-aid guidance and even help locate the nearest hospital or blood bank.
How we plan on building it
We plan on reading real stories from patients and caregivers, and shape REACT to fit real-world needs. We plan on using React.js to build an easy and accessible dashboard for patients and tie it to a quick, resilient Node.js backend, and make sure all info is kept encrypted and safe in a protected database.
For sharing info, we plan to create unique QR codes, alphanumeric codes or NFC cards, which anyone can scan with their phone. Connecting to Google APIs will help us set up transfusion reminders, and we aim to add a multi language chat and voice assistant on the website that is trained on accurate information only so that bystanders get helpful, instant instructions and not medical jargon.
Throughout, we aim to prioritize clear language, accessible design, and strong privacy protections.
Challenges we aim to solve
The main concern for such applications is privacy. Since medical info is very sensitive data keeping it secure is a challenge we aim to solve by only displaying information that the user wants to display. We also aim to add secure encryption algorithms that will help us keep the data safe from misuse.
Future goals for REACT (Rapid Emergency Access & Care Tag)
We want to make REACT even more inclusive, with support for more languages, and easier access for people of all ages and backgrounds. We want to expand to more chronic health conditions and partner with hospitals and blood banks to take the stress out of emergencies. We also plan to reach out to the e-RaktKosh team at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) for access to their API which will allow us to include blood stock enquiry, blood bank search, donor registration, and blood camp schedule retrieval in the website.
We hope to pilot REACT with local NGOs and keep refining it with patient feedback so that no one ever has to go through a crisis alone or unprepared.
