Inspiration
On several occasions, we would go to events and miss out on networking opportunities with great people just because we didn't get a chance to talk to them.
What it does
Our web app allows event coordinators to create a virtual room where event attendees can easily join and connect. The event coordinator can choose from a variety of social platforms and input fields for attendees to fill out, such as LinkedIn, GitHub, Instagram, Text Fields, File Uploads, websites, and many others. In these rooms, attendants can connect with other attendants in ways and at scales that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
How we built it
We built our app Reach using vanilla JavaScript, HTML, and a Firebase backend. We used Firebase's Firestore, Storage, and Hosting to make our app work on all devices.
Challenges we ran into
About 5 hours into the competition, we agreed that it would be better for us to switch from React to using vanilla JavaScript. This was a huge challenge for us because we had all practiced with React beforehand, but we decided it was for the best because it fit our vision for our project better. In the end, it was a very good decision that we are glad we made early.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We truly feel that our application is helpful at all types of events. We are proud of the ease of use of the application. The app requires minimal setup for both sides, the coordinator and attendant.
What we learned
We learned how to effectively build web apps using Firebase tools and how to incorporate the Gemini API into features of our app to make it better.
What's next for Reach
We hope that the coordinators of Hacklahoma see the value that our app brings to connecting people and potentially use the application in OU hackathons in the following years.
