Inspiration

Faced with the lack of newcomer access to banks, and language barriers in this globalized world, what can we do to help the least cared for demographic in banking?

Introducing: Reach RBC.

What it does

Reach RBC is a kiosk placed in airports all over Canada that explains RBC's newcomer banking options simply, books appointments for users while displaying the closest banking options, offered in 8 different languages to overcome the language barrier.

How we built it

Starting with a brainstorming system, we used design strategies to visualize a flowchart that worked through each possible options and screen that a user would use. From a screen for the different language options, a page for closest banks, and an appointment form system, we planned out the entire project from scratch.

From that point we worked with Figma to both decide the themes and aesthetic of the service and explore how the service would work with link animations and such.

We then worked to transform this to reality using React.js and node.js, making a backbone of a website that we could rework into our figma design. We worked on the nearest banking location page by utilizing the google maps api, which would allow us to display all the nearest locations in pins and the top three closest locations on the side.

Finally, using css with javascript, we formatted and specialized the website, using translation systems to offer all 8 languages.

Challenges we ran into

  • The complexity of utilizing the google maps API in our website to access locations
  • The formatting translation from Figma to Javascript would change spacing/formatting in some cases which caused work arounds
  • Different laptop sizings would cause formatting to be different when ran on a separate laptop

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This hack took the combined skills of four very different hackers with different technical backgrounds. From the idea formation, to the design process, to even the learning process of the languages and implementation, this project was completed and exceeded all our expectations because of our combined skill set. It's the most successful hackathon projects each team member has done, and truly feels important as this was a problem all of us faced in different ways.

What we learned

We learned the ins and outs of react.js,(from html and css, to the github pushing process), utilizing google apis, and maximizing Figma design

What's next for Reach RBC

We would implement the text-to-speech and speech recognition ideas we had to accommodate the visually impaired and those not familiar with their original language's script, respectively. We would also implement a translation api so that we could access as many languages as we can.
