Inspiration
The inspiration behind RE came from observing how organizations often struggle with resource shortages despite having existing resources that remain underutilized. In industries, hospitals, educational institutions, and government departments, valuable resources frequently go unused because information is scattered across different systems and departments.
What it does
RE is an AI-assisted, domain-independent resource utilization and decision-support platform that helps organizations maximize the efficiency of their existing resources. It connects resource data with organizational demand, analyzes utilization patterns, detects hidden or unused capacity, and intelligently matches available resources with current requirements.
How we built it
We built RE as a web-based prototype using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an interactive interface for resource management and decision support. First, we designed a system to represent organizational resources and demands using information such as capacity, utilization, availability, priority, and compatibility. Next, we implemented explainable, rule-based scoring logic to analyze resource utilization, identify hidden capacity, and rank suitable resources against specific demands.
Challenges we ran into
While developing RE, we faced several challenges: Fragmented Resource Data: Designing a common approach to represent different resources and demands across industries was challenging because each domain has different requirements.
Hidden Capacity Detection: We needed a reliable way to calculate available capacity and identify underutilized resources using resource utilization data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to develop RE, an innovative resource utilization and decision-support prototype built around the principle of Resource Reuse Before Resource Acquisition.
Our key accomplishments include:
Working Prototype: Developed a web-based prototype that demonstrates our core resource management and decision-support workflow.
Hidden Capacity Detection: Designed logic to identify underutilized resources and calculate their available capacity.
What we learned
While developing RE, we learned how to transform a real-world problem into a practical technology solution.
Problem-Solving: We learned to identify resource underutilization as an opportunity to improve efficiency rather than immediately acquiring new resources.
Data Analysis: We understood how resource capacity, utilization, availability, and demand can be analyzed to identify hidden capacity.
What's next for RE:SOURCE Intelligent Resource Utilization Decision System
Our next step is to transform RE from a proof-of-concept prototype into a reliable, scalable resource intelligence platform.
We plan to develop a Python-based backend and integrate a secure database to manage resource inventories and organizational demands. We aim to introduce machine learning for demand forecasting, anomaly detection, and predictive resource planning, enabling organizations to identify potential shortages before they occur.
