Inspiration

Confinement takes many forms: long hospital convalescence, chronic illness, or months trapped inside four walls during freezing blackouts. In prolonged isolation, the room shrinks and sensory deprivation sets in. You lose the horizon, natural light, and the physical texture of the world.

Inspired by historical resilience—like Frida Kahlo transforming her bedridden isolation into a canvas of vivid reality—Re:Horizon was created to prove that culture is an essential cognitive anchor. I wanted to build an agent that breaks through the walls and restores a person's lost perspective.

What it does

Re:Horizon is an empathetic sensory-restoration agent for individuals enduring severe physical, medical, or spatial isolation.

Instead of clinical medical checklists or generic white noise, the agent translates a person's emotional yearning for the outside world (such as open sea, natural sunlight, or mountain warmth) through Qloo's Taste Graph.

  • Low-Friction Energy Threshold: The user inputs only their current cognitive energy level (e.g., "15 minutes of focus, high sensory fatigue").
  • Autonomous Cultural Harmonization: The agent queries Qloo across disparate domains—pairing niche ambient music, tactile art textures, literary passages, and ambient lighting cues.
  • Micro-Horizon Session: It synthesizes a gentle 15-minute multi-sensory restorative sanctuary, preserving dignity and calming cognitive overload.

How I built it

  • Agent Core & Reasoning: Built with Google Gemini, interpreting nuanced emotional cues and mapping them into structured taste queries.
  • Cultural Intelligence: Integrated Qloo API v2 to navigate cross-domain correlations between visual art, ambient soundscapes, books, and environments.
  • Frontend & Presentation: Developed in Next.js (App Router) and Tailwind CSS, designed with high-contrast accessibility and calming typography for low cognitive strain.

Challenges I ran into

Translating subjective human longing (like "the smell of rain on pine trees" or "the feeling of open waters") into precise cultural queries without returning clichéd stock results. Leveraging Qloo's deep graph was critical to finding non-obvious artistic and acoustic intersections that genuinely feel authentic.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Designing an interface that asks nothing demanding from an exhausted user, yet delivers a profound, dignified cultural experience that makes four walls feel boundless.

What I learned

Culture and aesthetic beauty are not luxury entertainment—they are therapeutic necessities for mental survival and emotional recovery in confinement.

What's next for Re:Horizon

  • Integration with smart home protocols (Philips Hue, Matter) to synchronize physical room lighting directly with the cultural horizon.
  • Spatialized binaural soundscapes matching Qloo acoustic recommendations.
