Romania is the European country that has the largest migration of labor force. No other European country has lost more doctors over the last decade. The World Health Organization reports that Romania is now the European country with the fewest doctors per capita. This situation places Romania and its population in an extremely vulnerable position with respect to COVID-19.
Rețeaua de Solidaritate (Solidarity Network) launched the COVID-19 project in this context.
Through our efforts we contribute to protecting thousands of medical and auxiliary personnel in hospitals and other health units against infection with the new Coronavirus, we counteract fake news, we save lives and reduce costs. We brought together Romanian doctors practicing at home and Romanian physicians practicing abroad, many of whom have been on the Western European frontlines in the fight against COVID-19 in the last few weeks.
Romanian doctors in the diaspora have collected and transmitted valuable information and know-how to doctors at home to support their fight against the new Coronavirus through regular tele-conferences as well as through launching an impressive digital library, accessible to all on the Rețeaua de Solidaritate website. This digital library includes medical guides and protocols that were not accessible in Romania and Romanian language.
Concomitantly, Rețeaua de Solidaritate experts developed a communication strategy that included large-scale communication on national mass-media, focused on debunking fake news on COVID-19 while relaying correct medical information to the public. In addition, daily articles authored by Romanian doctors from the diaspora are published on the website www.reteauadesolidaritate.com and on the associated Facebook page. These articles include information targeted to medical professionals, national and local authorities, and the general public.
The members of the Rețeaua de Solidaritate continue to translate and adapt information on COVID-19 to the on-the-ground conditions in Romania. In the future, this model of expertise transfer from the diaspora will be employed in other areas such as science, innovation, and business.
We are working to transform Romania’s human capital loss into a global gain by capitalizing on the expertise of the Romanian diaspora and by engaging Romania in the international dialogue. Our work will now benefit all Romanian language speakers from Romania and the Republic of Moldova while thousands of patients from all over Europe will continue to benefit from the competence of Romanian doctors.
We are the Romanian Diaspora. Through Rețeaua de Solidaritate we send expertise, hope, and solidarity to Romanians at home. And to all the people in Europe.
