Inspiration

Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges of our time, and the rapid rise in carbon emissions across Asia highlights the need for accessible and effective solutions. Many individuals are eager to reduce their carbon footprint but struggle with tracking their emissions and finding actionable steps. Inspired by this gap, we created CarbonWise, a platform that simplifies carbon tracking and incentivizes sustainable behavior through data-driven insights, gamification, and rewards.

What it does

CarbonWise is a mobile-first digital platform that enables users to track their lifestyle-based emissions, receive personalized low-carbon recommendations, and earn rewards for adopting sustainable habits. By integrating real-time data, AI-driven analysis, and a Green Credits system, the platform empowers individuals to make informed environmental choices effortlessly. Through gamification and community engagement, CarbonWise turns sustainability into an interactive and rewarding experience.

How we built it

We developed CarbonWise using AI-powered carbon footprint analysis, smart meters, and user input tracking to ensure precise emissions calculations. The system leverages machine learning models for personalized reduction suggestions, IoT devices for real-time data collection, and gamified rewards to enhance engagement. Additionally, community-driven features encourage users to collaborate and compete in sustainable challenges, fostering a collective effort toward carbon reduction.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring data accuracy in emissions calculations across diverse user behaviors. Additionally, keeping users engaged required designing a platform that is both intuitive and rewarding. Lastly, scalability posed a challenge, as we needed a framework that could extend beyond universities to businesses and policy-driven sustainability programs. Overcoming these challenges was crucial in creating a platform that is both effective and widely applicable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully developed a working prototype that integrates AI-powered carbon tracking and designed an engaging gamification system that encourages long-term sustainable habits. Additionally, we created a scalable framework that allows CarbonWise to be expanded beyond universities and into corporate and urban sustainability initiatives. These achievements bring us closer to making carbon reduction simple, accessible, and rewarding for everyone.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that behavioral incentives are key to driving sustainable decision-making. Additionally, data-driven insights significantly enhance user engagement and the overall impact of carbon reduction efforts. We also realized that collaboration with institutions, businesses, and policymakers is essential for scaling sustainability solutions and integrating them into everyday life.

What's next for RE:EARTH

Moving forward, we aim to expand CarbonWise beyond universities by integrating it into corporate sustainability programs, smart city initiatives, and carbon credit systems. By partnering with businesses and local governments, we can help scale carbon tracking and reward-based sustainability efforts on a broader level. Our goal is to make carbon reduction effortless, rewarding, and community-driven, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for all.
