Inspiration
our inspiration for this device came from finding a cheap and easy way to secure your home.
What it does
The RDSM is a security device that can monitor any door and alert you if their is a lot of Carbon monoxide, smoke, and also monitor temperature, any motion in front of the door, or if your door is being opened. The device also features Bluetooth capabilities so that you can access any feature on the device via your smart phone.
How we built it
Each one of us took on a crucial role in the project. Eric was responsible for the coding of the system interface and the handling of alarm scheduling. Austin was responsible for developing the Bluetooth app as well as the code responsible for connecting to the device with. Brett designed and 3d printed the enclosure for the device, created the schematics, and handled the wiring of the device.
Challenges we ran into
One major problem we ran into was conflicting library definitions, eventually we had to rename a key variable called "IDLE" in the keypad library to "IDLE1". Additionally we had an issue of the bluetooth connection causing the device to crash after a few seconds. The problem was solved by slowing the polling frequency with a counter, which increased the stability of the device dramatically.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
as a team we are proud of how our project as a whole came out. We had many troubles moving the project along as we were implementing many different codes and ideas into one single project.
What we learned
We learned how to configure libraries that conflicted with each other, in addition to learning how to build an on board interface for the arduino using an lcd and Bluetooth capable application.
What's next for RDSM
If taken farther, we would like to increase the battery life off the device so that it can last longer, and develop the bluetooth app further, and add a way for the device to lock your door.
