A Telegram Bot that helps you calculate whether you've been overspending or underspending your meal credits at NUS RCs. It also allows potential buyers and sellers of credits to connect via telegram.
Inspiration- Couple of us are from NUS Residential Colleges and realized that we wanted to know how many meal credits we had in excess so we could go for second servings on a particular day.
What it does - Calculates whether you have a surplus or deficit of meal credits to help you make more informed credit spending decisions. Also links buyers and sellers of meal credits to help them liaise with each other.
How we built it- Using pyTelegramBotAPI and Replit database.
Challenges we ran into - if the user hadn't had breakfast yet, the bot would return a surplus of 1 credit which could be misleading. We thought of subtracting the 1 credit if the breakfast/dinner time period hadn't elapsed yet. However, it added unnecessary complications and we decided not to proceed with the subtraction.
Accomplishments that we're proud of - We've solved a real problem faced by students at NUS Residential Colleges (including ourselves). We learnt python and pyTelegramBotAPI in an hour and collaborated really efficiently to build the bot.
What we learned - There are times when increasing code complexity to deliver greater specificity to the user's needs can be detrimental to our project.
What's next for RC Meal Credit Bot- The commands to buy and sell credits do not make a distinction between breakfast and dinner credits, which are separate on the NUS Dining App. The code will now be updated to implement this feature, where buyers and sellers can distinguish between whether they want to buy/sell breakfast or dinner credits.
