Inspiration
The objective was to build a fully functional hardware project in the course of 32 hours.
What it does
It responds smoothly to the strokes of a D-pad on an Android App
How I built it
The chassis was designed in CAD, the Arduino controlled the motors used to drive the wheels from Bluetooth input. The app sent characters to the Bluetooth dongle and each character pertained to a certain direction which was characterized by certain motor speeds/directions.
Challenges I ran into
Spent a long time trying to get it to work with the Hololens, which is programmed with Unity. Due to the novelty of the Hololens, we ran into challenges trying to connect the Hololens and the car via Bluetooth and could not find helpful documentation on working around these issues.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The car has a feature which sends a command to the car to follow its path backward. It can also pop wheelies, which is awesome.
What I learned
That physical design is just as important if not more important than development when it comes to hardware. From the SolidWorks design of the chassis to the correct motors, everything had to be perfect for it to work as smoothly as it did.
What's next for RC Car (Hack Harvard 2016)
Add some more sensors to it so it can perform helpful things and solve real problems.
