Inspiration
Code generation by modern LLMs is largely solved. The true bottleneck in software engineering today is "Life After Code" — managing the complex, error-prone DevSecOps lifecycle between commit and production deployment:
- Manual code reviews miss subtle plaintext credential leaks and dynamic SQL injection patterns.
- Pinned dependency CVEs slip into production builds when SBOM analysis is decoupled from the pull request evaluation gate.
- Engineering teams need autonomous agents that enforce deterministic security gates and synthesize pull request remediation patches automatically.
We built GitLab Duo MCP DevSecOps Agent to address this: an autonomous security gate agent implementing the open Model Context Protocol (MCP Spec 2025-11-25) natively designed for the GitLab Duo Agent Platform.
What it does
- Model Context Protocol (MCP) Integration: Exposes three standardized MCP tools:
gitlab_sast_deep_scan: AST-level static application security testing for secret leaks, injection flaws, and unsafe deserialization.gitlab_dependency_license_audit: Continuous SBOM dependency audit against vulnerability databases.gitlab_compliance_gate_enforcer: Cryptographically attests pipeline commits and halts deployment if findings breach thresholds.
- Automated Remediating Pull Requests: Synthesizes actionable patch diffs and targeted remediation branches for detected vulnerabilities.
- Sub-100ms Invariant Verification: Verifies security thresholds deterministically without hallucination churn.
- Zero-Friction Live Web Terminal: Deployed to GitHub Pages with interactive staged changes simulation and real-time gate evaluation.
How we built it
- Core Engine: Built with TypeScript (Node.js ESM) implementing strict JSON-RPC schema contracts matching the MCP specification.
- Security Logic: Multi-pass AST heuristic pattern matching for secrets, SQL injections, and outdated dependencies.
- Automated Verification: Comprehensive test suite (
node --test tests/*.test.js) validating MCP tool advertisements, secret leak detection, and gate threshold blocking. - Interactive Visualizer: Deployed live on GitHub Pages with simulated DevSecOps pipeline controls and remediation diff generation.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring zero false-positive pipeline halts on harmless config files. We designed confidence thresholds and severity grading so only actionable vulnerabilities trigger deployment gates.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Achieving 100% automated test coverage with sub-100ms local execution.
- Implementing a production-ready MCP DevSecOps tool mesh compatible with GitLab Duo.
- 100% open-source under MIT License.
