Inspiration

Many rating systems out there today are broken - time-consuming, boring, and unappealing. There’s no incentive for users to leave reviews and when they do, the data is often skewed and repetitive.

How it works

Our rating system, Magpie, is fun, quick, easy to use, and universally understood. First, tap on the emoticon that best describes how you feel about your experience. Hold it down to show how much you’re feeling it! On the next screen, choose which words you associate with your experience. Let’s say you stayed at a homestay - Was it peaceful, charming, or authentic? Lastly, add any other comments that you haven’t already expressed.

Because users choose which words describe their experiences, our system can automatically build personalized profiles based on their preferences. Eventually, we can suggest restaurants, travel accommodations, and sightseeing experiences tailored to their profiles. On the flip side, our system collects useful qualitative information about the traveler’s experience. Magpie can privately deliver valuable feedback to business owners.

Challenges we ran into

Our engineer was unable to attend the hackathon, so we have to work hard to convey the idea without the help of technology.

What's next for Magpie Rating System

We will eventually incorporate this rating system into our own travel app, Magpie. Magpie lets you exchange homes and travel the world for free. (getmagpie.com)
