Inspiration

Our team held the shared objective of responding to a genuine community need. When discussing the problems we face as university students, we suddenly realized how many issues are often dismissed when it comes to marginalized groups. A specific challenge that came up was how the influx of construction at UMD obstructs pathways around campus. We recognized how much of a challenge this presents to disabled students and decided to build a website that could address this, and even serve as a supportive network in the long run.

What it does

Rate MyPath offers a community-driven resource in which students can not only find navigation directions around UMD, but more importantly review and rate their path experiences based on accessibility and disability-friendliness. This creates a hub of shared feedback where students can utilize their peers' insights to move more confidently and freely around campus.

How we built it

For our website development we utilized HTML for our foundational structure, CSS for our styling and layout, JavaScript for our animations, and employed Visual Studio (VS) as a suite for coding collaboration.

Challenges we ran into

Our team was made up of diverse skill sets, with some members who had more experience in UX design, while other members specialized in differing coding languages. It was a challenge for us to find common ground, and achieve our objectives in such a limited time frame.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

We are proud of our meticulous user interface and even more proud of our exploration of new languages. What was most fulfilling however, was creating a site that responded to a true community need.

What we learned

With some beginners, and some skilled, it was a rewarding learning experience for all of our team members to refine our knowledge of HTML and CSS.

What's next for Rate MyPath

We hope to incorporate more features based on community engagement that can allow users to share their favorite pathways directly to others and facilitate navigational choices.
