Inspiration
Recent posts on Reddit r/Monash about "serial shitters" and unit struggles have been creating Monash student social engagement much more effectively than other university-based social platforms. This inspired us to create Ratato, an app where conversation, debate and antics are fostered, with a focus on opinions via the ratings system.
What it does
The app is designed to allow users to create ratings for ANYTHING, from past units to your favourite study spots. Simply create a rating for a concept or a location, and post. There is less emphasis on the original poster as we focus on the community aspect of the average rating and the conversations within the comment sections. The app also plans to include an AR feature, which allows users to scan their surroundings to see nearby ratings.
How we built it
The app was built using React Native, and implemented with Visual Studio Code and Github. The concept video was created with Blender 3D and VEED.io and the logo with Photoshop.
Challenges we ran into
Coming up with a unique idea was challenging, and since most of us hadn’t used React Native before, there was a steep learning curve that was assisted by AI.
What we learned
For most of us, this was our first time diving into React Native, and seeing our app come to life was nothing short of exhilarating. Above all, we learned to work in a team; Ratato is a product of the power of friendship.
What's next for Ratato
This is just the beginning for Ratato. In future, we plan on adding the AR feature and ability to create more categories. We plan to use AI-powered object detection integrated with AR and GPS features to identify objects for rating creation.
