Inspiration
We enjoy puzzle games and simulation games such as Lemmings, which was an inspiration for the game mechanics. The visual style was medieval inspired, with the in-game landscape being inspired by games like Limbo.
What it does
It is a 2D simulation puzzle game where the player needs to complete levels by leading their rat army through five dungeons. Using strategy, the player must control where the rats will go to pickup gold and make it back to the entrance.
How we built it
We used the Godot game engine, which uses GDScript as its programming language. The game art and assets were drawn using Procreate. Aseprite was used to generate the sprite sheets for animations and in-game tilesets.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenges were ideation which took 5 hours, and game bugs which took up the rest of the time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud we made a complete game in just 24 hours, with an appealing medieval design in the art and a unique style for the in-game lighting and levels. We also only used AI to troubleshoot small bugs in the project, which is something we are very proud of.
What we learned
It's better to take small breaks when facing a challenge than to focus on it the whole time. We minimized the scope of the game from the initial designs of the game due to the time constraints.
What's next for Rat King
The game will be receiving more levels and items to be used. Adding some quality of life features like level replaying, item removal and an in-game tutorial would make it easier for people to learn the game mechanics through trial and error.
