Skincare consumer spending exceeds $180 billion globally, yet consumer churn is rampant due to a single universal problem: a total lack of objective proof.
Today, skincare shoppers are overwhelmed by influencer sponsorships, exaggerated marketing buzzwords, and overpriced luxury packaging. Most people spend hundreds of dollars on multi-step routines without having any idea whether a product is actively healing their skin barrier or silently causing sub-clinical inflammation, lipid rebound, and clogged pores.
We asked a simple question: What if skincare had receipts?
We built RasoSkin to replace blind trust with clinical accountability. By pairing Perfect Corp's industry-leading YouCam computer vision AI with an algorithmic formulation engine, RasoSkin turns a quick 10-second daily face scan into a verifiable dermatological journey: diagnosing failure points, prescribing proven active ingredients alongside accessible budget-friendly science dupes, and mathematically proving routine efficacy over 28 days.
What It Does
RasoSkin is a closed-loop dermatological companion built on four core pillars:
Daily 10-Second Vision Scan: Users capture or upload a portrait once a day. Integrating Perfect Corp's YouCam S2S v2.0 API, RasoSkin maps 16 discrete clinical biomarkers across five facial zones (forehead, nose, cheeks, periorbital eye area, and chin), evaluating follicular sebum clogs, pore dilation, erythema redness, surface oiliness, epidermal hydration, and dermal recoil elasticity.
Clinical Formulation Triage & Accessible Science Dupes: Diagnosed concerns are translated from pharmacological jargon into plain English. The engine matches failure points to targeted gold-standard actives (e.g., 2% BHA Salicylic Acid, Centella Asiatica, Retinaldehyde, Niacinamide) and pairs each with an accessible, science-backed budget dupe sharing identical active potency, saving users between 20% and 72% per bottle:

AM / PM Algorithmic Routine & Contraindication Guard: Automatically structures products into a morning barrier defense routine and an evening cellular turnover protocol. Strict dermatological guards warn against hazardous combinations (such as concurrent strong Retinoids and exfoliating direct acids).
Skincare with Receipts (Longitudinal Proof): Users track their barrier progression across 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. RasoSkin computes exact biomarker progression deltas, provides an interactive photographic before/after split visualizer, features a real-time "What-If" Rebound Simulator (simulating what happens if an active is dropped), and generates an official, timestamped Archival PNG Clinical Receipt with cryptographic barcodes and verification seals.
How We Built It
RasoSkin was engineered as a high-performance, modular full-stack application:
- AI Vision Pipeline (YouCam S2S Cloud v2.0 API):

https://yce-api-01.makeupar.com). - Implemented a resilient two-phase streaming architecture: requesting file tickets, dispatching binary streams via AWS S3 Accelerate, and polling 16 neural skin biomarker task bundles with exponential backoff.

- Deterministic Optical Colorimetry Fallback Engine:
- Computes objective skin phototypes via CIELAB (L*, a*, b*) coordinates and calculates the Individual Typology Angle (ITA°): ITA° = arctan((L* − 50) / b*) × 180/π
- Classifies warm, cool, and neutral undertones to ensure formulation compatibility.
- Backend Architecture:
- Built with FastAPI (Python 3.12+), utilizing Uvicorn for asynchronous I/O and Pillow/NumPy for image telemetry validation.
- Accompanied by a 15-test pytest suite covering API schema compliance, error handling, and offline fallback dispatching.
- Frontend & Editorial Design System:
- Built with React 18, Vite, and Tailwind CSS.
- Styled using an archival Swiss Architectural Editorial Design System (Alabaster Linen
#F7F5F0, Obsidian Carbon#141312, Sienna Terre#8C4736, and Clinical Emerald#1A382B) that intentionally avoids generic rounded card-soup templates. - Integrated Lenis smooth scrolling, Framer Motion transitions, and client-side HTML5 Canvas receipt rendering for pixel-perfect 2x archival PNG export.
Challenges We Faced
YouCam S2S Multi-Model Concurrency: Perfect Corp's API offers an expansive suite of discrete models (pores, wrinkles, moisture, spots, oiliness). Orchestrating multi-model requests, ensuring asynchronous polling with backoff, and unifying diverse score payloads into a normalized 0–100 schema required meticulous API client design.
Eliminating SaaS "Card Soup" for Clinical Elegance: Early versions relied on generic floating cards that overwhelmed users with raw metrics. We completely re-architected the UI into an editorial monograph aesthetic with dividing hairlines, glanceable metric meters, plain-English explanations, and an unmistakable focus on active recommendations and dupe savings.
Deterministic Canvas Receipt Generation: Rendering high-resolution archival receipts directly in the client browser across varying device pixel ratios required writing custom canvas typography and barcode generation routines that ensure cryptographic consistency.

What We Learned

- The Value of Contraindication Guardrails: Skincare consumers frequently impair their skin barrier by layering incompatible active ingredients; algorithmic routine guards provide immense real-world safety value.
What's Next for RasoSkin
- Barcode & Ingredient Scanner: Allowing users to scan any physical skincare bottle at a retail store and immediately check whether its active ingredients match their latest YouCam daily scan.
- Dermatologist Telehealth Portal: Enabling 1-click export of 28-day longitudinal delta logs directly to certified dermatologists via standard HL7/FHIR clinical formats.
