Rasoi: an Alexa+ add-on for the Indian kitchen

Inspiration. Indian households plan the week with the cook, by meal slot, in Hindi, Marathi and English. The output of that conversation is a shopping list that lives on a WhatsApp message or a scrap of paper, and the thing you forgot is always the paneer. Alexa is in the kitchen already; it just doesn't understand "bhindi."

What it does. You speak the week's menu. Rasoi expands dishes into ingredients scaled to the household, diffs them against the pantry, builds a dated buy list grouped into shopping trips, suggests what to cook from what's left, nudges you Sunday evening and each morning, answers "what's for dinner, do we have everything," reads the household calendar to suggest moving dinner, and renders a plain-text prep list for the cook who doesn't have Alexa.

How we built it. Self-hosted MCP server (spec 2025-11-25, Streamable HTTP) in TypeScript/Hono; twelve small tools over a libsql database; Amazon Bedrock (Amazon Nova 2 Lite via the Converse API) for dish→ingredient expansion with schema-constrained output; one Docker image on AWS App Runner (AgentCore Runtime's inbound auth couldn't carry our callers — friction log FL-04); EventBridge scheduled rules → API destination drive the nudges. The Alexa+ MCP Toolkit is partner-only, so the demo is a simulated Alexa+ (as the rules allow): a web app where Amazon Nova Sonic transcribes your voice, an agent playing Alexa+ calls Rasoi's real MCP tools, Amazon Polly (Kajal, Indian English) speaks the reply, and a live panel shows every tool call's input and output. Tool telemetry layer spun out as mcp-tool-ledger (MIT).

What's next. Run the same twelve tools on the real Alexa+ MCP Toolkit when access opens; per-speaker personalisation when Alexa+ exposes speaker identity to MCP; Alexa list sync when add-ons get list access; more Indian languages.

Who it's for. Indian households that plan food by the meal, often with a cook, in more than one language, and anyone who plans meals for a family weekly.
