Inspiration

We were inspired by the vibrant life and beauty of tropical rainforests. Our project was created in response to the threats facing these complex and diverse ecosystems. Deforestation and degradation as a result of the logging industry, forest fires, and clearcutting for pasture land, leads to habitat fragmentation, which severely decreases the biodiversity in a region.

What it does

Improves the efficiency of rainforest restoration efforts through habitat corridor creation via drone technology. Our curriculum involves indigenous communities directly in the efforts to reforest their land.

How we built it

We adapted existing technologies to new uses and a wider consumer base and developed a model of mutual effort and education that can be applied to any indigenous community to accomplish reforestation goals.

Challenges we ran into

Viability of drone use within remote and hostile environments.

What's next for Rapid Rainforest Reforestation

Expanding to the restoration of additional terrestrial ecosystems. The endangered but iconic tallgrass prairie ecosystem of North America will likely be our next focus.
