Inspiration

The inspiration was a game we play at school, where students compete against each other to find out who can solve more math problems. That game really fires up everyone, which made me think, why not get this game to everyone??

What it does

Players try to solve as many math problems as they can in one minute while making less than 3 mistakes. The current prototype has options for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and comparison sums. The leaderboard stores your highest scores which you can either share with your friends to compete or you can work towards beating your own scores!! You even get life tokens every six hours to continue playing even after you made three mistakes during a run.

How we built it

I used Unity, with C# language to make the game. It has fun and attractive visuals with motivating music, playing in the background.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenged we ran into was that sharing highscores stopped working because of an outdated package, which took a while to find and fix, but gladly resolved the issue.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The visuals are very appealing. The life tokens attract players to return to the game (instead of doom-scrolling!)which improves their math skills as well as problem-solving ability. The highscores create a competitive nature, which fuels more incline towards the educational platform, much like a video game.

What we learned

One of the key learnings from this project is to check all version compatibilities for packages before clicking on the update button. Another, is that it is a great feeling to see someone enjoy your app/project live offline, because seeing my users smile was very pleasant and motivating.

What's next for Rapid Mathematic

Next, I'm looking at multiplayer online, more math modes and different themes to introduce more video game-like aspects and reel in kids away from mindless things online.
