Our project, HEDID, was inspired by the delays we observed in emergency healthcare, where patients often arrive without accessible medical records. We wanted to create a system that allows doctors to access vital patient information instantly, saving precious time.
During this project, we learned how to integrate existing digital ID systems with healthcare workflows, ensuring secure and fast data access. We explored authentication methods including biometric verification, QR/NFC scanning, and controlled emergency overrides, while keeping patient privacy and data protection in mind.
We built the system using a centralized secure platform with APIs for hospital integration, a USSD interface for rural accessibility, and a mobile app for urban areas. Offline functionality ensures no loss of data during connectivity issues.
The biggest challenges were designing a workflow that works for both conscious and unconscious patients and ensuring data security while allowing rapid access in emergencies. Overcoming these taught us the importance of balancing usability, speed, and privacy in healthcare technology.
