Inspiration
Unsurprisingly my inspiration for this comes from everyone's favorite chameleon cowboy, Rango! I was -mildly- obsessed with this movie as a kid, and was blown away by how oddly realistic all of the characters looked and moved. Years later, now making and animating characters myself, I knew I had to do a bit of a tribute piece.
How I built it
This model was created by me in Zbrush, textured in Substance, and rigged and animated in 3ds Max. Finally, this video was captured within Unreal 5.
Challenges I ran into
Sadly, due to time constraints within this modeling course, it was decided only upper-body busts should be created. I spent much more time on the modeling and rigging of this character, but I thoroughly enjoyed bringing him to life through animation and would've loved to give him a full body to animate.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This was my first time rigging any of my models, and I think it turned out relatively decent! As for the animation part, it had been a bit since I animated last, and I was happy that I was able to pick it right back up, even for just a small emote like this.
What I learned
I learned a ton about the process of rigging and developed my skills in all of the programs mentioned.
What's next for Rango Emote Animation
As stated previously, I would love to give this character a full body. At that point, I could animate an array of movement cycles to get him to the working level of a playable character! At the very least, I could use his current state and give him a few more emote animations.
