Random Pokemon Generator: Project Story
Inspiration
This tool started as a casual weekend hobby. I often hopped between multiple tabs to generate random Pokémon, calculate battle stats and build competitive teams. Tired of switching separate websites repeatedly, I decided to combine all essential Pokémon utilities into one single, clutter-free page with zero login barriers.
What I Learned
I mastered frontend data organization to sort over 1,000 Pokémon entries across 9 generations. I also picked up stat algorithm logic for IV/EV calculation, JSON import/export functions, and responsive UI design. Besides technical skills, I learned to build user-centric tools that prioritize privacy by skipping user tracking and registration.
Development Process
- Collected official Pokémon data, artwork, type info and audio cries for all generations.
- Coded the random generator with filters for generation, type and legendary Pokémon.
- Built core modules: IV/EV calculator, 6-Pokémon team planner, and 18×18 type chart.
- Added casual mini-games: Smash or Pass and Who’s That Pokémon.
- Optimized the site to be fully free, no sign-up, no data tracking before launch.
- Released the project twice on Product Hunt for wider community feedback.
Key Challenges
- Sorting and storing massive Pokémon dataset without slowing down page loading.
- Accurately coding complex EV/IV stat formulas and Tera Type coverage analysis.
- Balancing rich features while keeping the interface simple and lightweight.
- Ensuring full privacy compliance with no user tracking or mandatory accounts.
