🩸 RaktGram
📌 Inspiration
As a proud member of the NSS (National Service Scheme) unit at CBIT, I’ve been actively involved in responding to urgent blood donation requests. These requests often come through WhatsApp groups or direct messages, and we share them through our NSS Instagram handle or personal stories to spread the word quickly.
While this approach helps in reaching out to many people, I observed a huge gap in confirmation and coordination.
The biggest challenge?
We never truly know whether the patient received help or if everyone simply assumed:
“Someone else might have helped.”
This often leads to critical delays or missed donations.
That uncertainty and lack of transparency made me think:
What if we had a centralized system that keeps donors, patients, and volunteers truly informed in real-time?
🧠 What We Learned
Through this project, we gained insights into:
- Donor-patient matching mechanisms
- Building a post-based system that mimics a social feed to attract younger users
- Creating notification systems that persist until acknowledged
- The importance of verified requests to manage genuine medical needs
- Structuring a multi-level admin model for efficient escalation and issue tracking
- Designing an interface that’s intuitive, secure, and emotionally engaging
🛠️ How We Built It
We developed the system with a three-tiered interface: Donor, Patient, and Admin.
🔧 Tech Stack:
- Frontend: Angular
- Backend: Node.js with Express
- Database: MongoDB (managed via Studio 3T)
- Authentication: Basic login system with checks to prevent duplicate accounts
📬 Notifications:
- SMS via Twilio
- Email via SendGrid
- Calendar Reminders using Google Calendar API
🧠 AI Modules (in progress / post-hackathon):
- Donor prediction based on donation history and geographic proximity
- Campaign location optimization using patient density
- Urgency scoring for patient posts using contextual data
Each patient request is treated as a unique post, verified via Aadhaar, and includes a marking mechanism that tracks whether the requirement is still active.
If a post nears its due date and remains unaddressed, the system automatically escalates the case from admins to the super admin for immediate attention.
⚠️ Challenges We Faced
- Ensuring authenticity of both donors and patient requests
- Designing a real-time alert system that is persistent yet non-intrusive
- Building a UI that balances urgency with empathy
- Integrating with external tools like Google Calendar and managing email/SMS APIs
- Addressing data privacy concerns, especially while dealing with Aadhaar-linked requests and sensitive medical details
💡 Summary
RaktGram is a project born from real-world, on-ground experience. It was driven by the need for clarity, coordination, and confirmation in the blood donation process. By combining:
- A social-media-inspired interface
- AI-driven donor engagement
- A structured, escalated admin workflow
We aim to ensure that no blood requirement goes unanswered.
We believe that RaktGram has the power to support organizations like Blood Warriors in transforming the way blood donation is requested, tracked, and fulfilled — with empathy, efficiency, and trust.
