Inspiration

Every few seconds, someone needs blood to survive, especially patients with conditions like Thalassemia. We wanted to make sure that when someone needs help, they get it fast. Inspired by the efforts of AI for Good, Blend, and Blood Warriors, Rakta Mitra was born to connect donors and recipients with the power of technology and empathy.

What it does

We offer a platform that connects blood donors and recipients easily. Whether it’s a hospital, blood bank, or an individual in need, we make sure they can reach out to the right donor, right when they need them.

Here’s how we do that:

WhatsApp Chatbot: Hospitals and blood banks can message donors directly via WhatsApp. No app download. No hassle.

Geospatial Matching: We use location tech (Uber-style hex indexing) to find nearby, eligible donors instantly.

Donor Prediction Model: AI predicts who’s likely to say yes — so we don’t waste time or energy.

Gamification: Donors earn badges, recognition, and a chance to be featured — turning kindness into a community moment.

We're working on a personalized 7-day diet plan for Thalassemia patients to help them manage iron intake better.

Challenges

Getting geolocation and donor matching to work in real time
Designing a solution that could scale and stay reliable
Balancing medical accuracy with personalization for diet plans

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our end-to-end flow works: a donor can be found, contacted, and connected all through a single platform

Building a meaningful chatbot experience on WhatsApp

Designing a gamification system to celebrate donors, not just track them

Creating the first version of a diet plan generator for Thalassemia care

What we learned

A simple WhatsApp message can mean hope, relief, and sometimes, a second chance at life. Real-world health problems need deep research and empathy-driven design
