Inspiration
We got the idea for Rāksha after seeing how difficult it can be for elderly people to identify fake messages, suspicious links, and scam calls. Many elderly users use WhatsApp, online banking, and digital payments, but may not always know whether something they receive is genuine.
We wanted to make a simple AI tool that could act as an extra layer of protection and help them understand possible scams before they respond.
What it does
Rāksha is a multilingual AI assistant for elderly users that helps identify possible digital scams.
Users can provide a suspicious message, link, or other information, and Rāksha checks for common warning signs such as fake offers, urgent requests, suspicious links, impersonation, and requests for sensitive information.
Instead of only saying "this is a scam," Rāksha also explains why something may be suspicious in simple language.
How we built it
We started by researching common digital scams and the techniques scammers use to trick people.
Then we designed a simple interface with elderly users in mind. We are using AI-based analysis to identify suspicious patterns and provide understandable explanations.
We are also working on multilingual support so users can interact with Rāksha in a language they are comfortable with.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was finding the right balance between accuracy and simplicity.
We didn't want Rāksha to give complicated cybersecurity explanations that an elderly user might not understand. At the same time, we wanted the results to provide useful information instead of simply showing a "safe" or "unsafe" label.
Handling different types of scams and languages was another challenge we had to consider.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we turned an everyday problem into a working AI-based solution idea.
We are especially happy with the focus on elderly users, because accessibility and simplicity are important parts of Rāksha rather than being added as an afterthought.
We also managed to combine AI, cybersecurity, multilingual support, and user-friendly design into one project.
What we learned
While building Rāksha, we learned that cybersecurity is not only about detecting threats. It is also about helping people understand those threats.
We learned more about AI-based analysis, scam patterns, designing for elderly users, and the importance of keeping technology simple and accessible.
Most importantly, we learned that a good solution should solve a real problem instead of just using technology for the sake of using it.
What's next for RĀKSHA-AI for Elderly Scam Protection
Our next goal is to improve Rāksha's accuracy and support more types of scams.
We want to add features such as real-time scam detection, suspicious-link analysis, voice/call scam assistance, more Indian languages, and clearer explanations for users.
In the future, we want Rāksha to become a simple digital safety companion that elderly users can rely on whenever they are unsure about a call, message, or link.
