Inspiration

I wanted to build something that could help senior citizens feel safer and more independent in their everyday lives. Seniors may face situations where they need assistance but cannot always react quickly, explain what happened, or reach someone immediately.

Rāksha was inspired by the idea of creating an intelligent safety companion that can understand a situation, identify potential risks, and help connect a senior with the right support when it matters.

What it does

Rāksha is an AI-powered safety companion designed specifically for senior citizens.

It focuses on providing an additional layer of support through AI-assisted safety detection, emergency assistance, and context-aware support.

The goal is not to replace caregivers or emergency services, but to help seniors stay safer and more connected while maintaining their independent

How we built it

I designed Rāksha around a simple core workflow:

Detect → Understand → Assist

The system uses AI to process relevant information, identify situations that may require attention, and initiate the appropriate assistance flow.

I focused on keeping the experience simple and accessible instead of overwhelming seniors with complicated controls. I also designed the project with a modular structure so additional safety and AI capabilities can be added in future versions.

Challenges we ran into

As a solo developer, one of my biggest challenges was balancing ambitious functionality with the time and resources available for a hackathon.

I also had to think carefully about:

Reducing unnecessary alerts while still identifying genuine risks Designing interactions that are easy for seniors to understand Making the system useful without making it complicated Deciding when AI should act automatically and when human involvement is necessary Designing Rāksha as a complete safety workflow rather than simply an AI chatbot

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that I took Rāksha from an idea to a functional prototype completely independently.

As a solo developer, I handled the project across the ideation, user-focused design, technical implementation, AI integration, and overall product direction.

I am especially proud of creating Rāksha around a real-world problem and designing it with the goal of helping seniors remain independent while having an additional layer of safety and support.

What we learned

Building Rāksha taught me that creating an AI solution for safety requires much more than simply integrating an AI model.

I learned how important context, user experience, reliability, and human oversight are when designing technology for situations where people may be vulnerable or under stress.

Working on the project independently also pushed me to make technical and product decisions on my own and taught me how to turn a broad idea into a focused working prototype.

What's next for Rāksha

My next goal is to make Rāksha more reliable, personalized, and useful in real-world situations.

Future versions could include:

Advanced AI-based risk detection Voice-first interaction for seniors Fall and unusual-activity detection Smarter emergency escalation Trusted-contact and caregiver integration Location sharing during verified emergencies Personalized safety patterns and alerts Multilingual support for Indian languages Real-world user testing

Ultimately, I want Rāksha to evolve from a hackathon prototype into a dependable AI safety companion that helps senior citizens live more independently while keeping their trusted people connected.
