RakhtBandhan
Inspiration
RakhtBandhan was born from the urgent need to transform how blood is sourced, tracked, and delivered for Thalassemia patients. In India, most of donors live in urban centers, while many patients live in rural areas. most of blood donations are still replacement-based, not voluntary. Conversations with Blood Warriors volunteers and families revealed life-threatening delays due to reactive donation drives. This inspired us to build a proactive, AI-powered ecosystem that bridges urban donor surpluses to rural patient needs.
What it does
AI-Driven Donor Forecasting Predicts donor availability with high accuracy using: Historical donation patterns Academic calendars Seasonal trends
Institutional Campaign Hub Automates blood drive scheduling with: NSS/NCC units Corporate CSR teams NGOs → Converts volunteers into regular, recurring donors
Smart Logistics Network Coordinates IoT-enabled cold-chain vans Maintains 1–6 °C temperature for blood safety Uses route optimization to ensure sub-6-hour emergency dispatches
Donor Engagement & Impact Tracking Real-time tracking of donated blood journey Personalized notifications & gamified rewards Visual maps to build emotional connection
How we built it
Aspect Description Proactive Planning AI models forecast donor availability and patient needs ahead of time. Data-Driven Decisions Uses historical data, academic calendars, and seasonal trends to optimize outreach. Community Engagement Collaborates with NSS/NCC units, NGOs, and CSR teams to build a donor network. Smart Logistics IoT-enabled vans ensure safe, temperature-controlled blood delivery. Scalable Architecture Modular, cloud-native microservices support regional and national expansion. Inclusivity & Access Designed for both urban tech-savvy users and rural communities with limited access. Transparency & Impact Real-time tracking of donations boosts trust and encourages recurring donors.
Challenges we ran into
Data Integration: Needed custom APIs to unify hospital, donor, and university systems. Cold-Chain Reliability: Long rural routes required edge-computing & backup power. Prediction Bias: Urban-heavy datasets led to skewed AI results → solved with federated learning. Regulatory Navigation: Navigated NACO/state approvals with strict privacy compliance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
At RakhtBandhan, we believe that access to life-saving blood should never depend on last-minute appeals or geographic limitations. Our approach is rooted in proactivity, precision, and partnerships. By harnessing the power of AI-driven forecasting, institutional collaboration, and smart logistics, we aim to shift the blood donation process from a reactive system to a predictable and patient-centric network. We don’t just connect donors and patients — we build an ecosystem that anticipates needs, mobilizes volunteers, and ensures timely, safe delivery of every unit.
Our platform is designed to be: Data-Informed – using real-world patterns to forecast demand and availability Community-Driven – empowering colleges, NGOs, and corporates as change agents Scalable and Inclusive – with modular systems adaptable across regions and demographics Tech-Enabled – from AI to IoT, ensuring every step is optimized and accountable This approach allows us to serve Thalassemia patients not just with urgency, but with dignity, consistency, and care.
What we learned
User-Centric Design: Simplicity is crucial for rural users with limited tech access Data Diversity Matters: Bias-free AI needs inclusive and decentralized datasets Collaboration Wins: Universities, NGOs, and regulators must be onboard early Flexible Architecture: Microservices enabled us to scale quickly across regions
