We all live in a world, where most of the people take the least interest on climate change either because 'it doesn't affect them directly during their lifetime' or 'they don't understand the extent of climate change'. In this era of digital age, we are drowning in information & ending up not being able to comprehend some of the important data available out there. There is a lot of data & insights available about climate change, which either goes ignored or misunderstood.
AIM
The aim of the application is to raise awareness for Climate Change on the lines of the famous pandemic game called Geo guesser, but for climate. The goal is to attract people's attention about climate change by asking curious questions and providing meaningful information through analyzed official data sets. This will help citizens understand and be aware of the impacts of changing climate, also thereby help them take sustainable decisions. The application uses a lot of Switzerland datasets and is therefore focused on Switzerland.
what it does?
This is a simple web application, where a random question, along with a map of Switzerland is generated to the user. The answer for the question, would be a geographical location that the user has to pick. Depending on how far or close his picked location is to the correct one, the user is scored. When the answer is displayed, the application also generates & displays some graphics about the similar data run on Swiss datasets. This way, the user is educated and also motivated to get the answer for the next question. What's different?
Although, the clear and usual answer when encountering interesting datasets would be visualization in fancy dashboards, but it doesn't involve interaction and a lot of information goes unnoticed. Our application is different as it gamifies (with points) the whole process, forces interaction with the user & makes the best effort to spread awareness through simple graphics.
what were the challenges
The data available is great, but it required quite a lot of understanding just to work on it. We split amongst the team and spend half of the hackathon understanding the data, accessing the data through discussions amongst us and with the partners.
Our team started as 5 random strangers (most of them college freshmen) before Friday & is now a team of 5 amazing people who learnt a lot, loves to collaborate & takes up responsibility when needed. The only challenge we had was managing a hybrid team. Rest was top notch.
what's next?
During the course of the hackathon, we could go through and understand few of the datasets. We still have a lot more to go through & create more questions & insights. Besides, we can also extend our application to have a social leaderboard.
A new feature could be modifying with artificial intelligence a picture of a place the user is living nearby and visualize the prevision in the next decades to make them feel there will live the climate change and make them wonder how will they handle it.## Inspiration
