Inspiration

We were inspired by the sheer amount of ragebait we see on social media, news sites and blog posts. Surely, there had to be a quirky way to combat this while maintaining the reader's sanity, right?

What it does

It is a chrome extension that rates the web article being rendered on 2 scales, manipulation and seriousness, based on words and phrases used in the articles. Then, there is a ragebait tier given to the site, from F to S++. Articles that score S++ trigger random cat image generations to soothe the brain. Meanwhile, there is a ragebait profile that shows a graphic of the score on 6 scales, with emotional summaries and signals. There are links to the hot paragraphs with high densities of ragebait. Importantly, there are 2 modes, RageBlur (which blurs ragebait-dense paragraphs) and RedPen (which marks out and annotates ragebait detected in bright red, much like a teacher).

How we built it

We used node and js.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to use ML and sentiment analysis but ran into many false positives.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to get this done in 24h.

What we learned

We learnt about how to wrestle with JS for chrome extensions.

What's next for Ragebait Meter

More features, specifically directed towards making fun of the ragebait in the articles.
