Inspiration
The idea for RAGAM was born from a simple but painful realization: We are forgetting.
For centuries, Indonesia's traditional fabrics like batik, ulos, tenun, songket, tapis, lurik have told stories of our people, our beliefs, and our identity. But today, these stories are fading. Only a handful of motifs are widely known, and even fewer are still being made.
Our generation lives in a digital world, where fast fashion dominates and cultural traditions are often left behind. We saw a dangerous gap forming between modern youth and the traditional artisans who still hold this wisdom. We saw elders weaving alone, without students. Motifs with deep meaning, scrolling past like forgotten patterns.
And that’s when it hit us: Culture won’t vanish because of war, but it’ll vanish because we forget. Unless we find a way to pass it on. RAGAM was created as a bridge. Between the past and the present, the loom and the smartphone, the village and the city. It is our effort to make cultural preservation not just accessible, but personal, interactive, and empowering.
Because for us Heritage isnt something you store, its something you live.
What it does
RAGAM is a digital platform that allows users to:
- Scan and recognize fabric patterns Using visual recognition technology powered by machine learning, users can scan traditional fabrics to identify the pattern’s name, region of origin, and the philosophy behind it.
- Learn the philosophy and history behind traditional fabrics Provides educational content that explores the historical background, cultural significance, and philosophical meanings of each scanned motif.
- Design their own custom batik with tutorial videos Users can unleash their creativity by designing their own digital batik patterns with the help of interactive and easy-to-follow tutorial videos.
- Share and showcase their work on social media Users can instantly share their creations on social media as a form of self-expression and to help preserve cultural heritage in the digital era.
How we built it
We built RAGAM using a modern full-stack approach:
- Back-End: Node.js, Express, MySQL, and Google Cloud Storage
- Front-End: React.js, Firebase, and Reflow for fast UI development
- Deployment: Google Cloud Platform
- Includes an intelligent Fabric Recognition Mechanism powered by machine learning to detect and identify traditional patterns and their regions of origin
Challenges we ran into
- Data scarcity and dataset suitability It was challenging to find verified, high-resolution, and contextually accurate fabric datasets from various regions. Many available sources lacked the cultural depth or consistency needed for meaningful pattern recognition
- Post-deployment errors We encountered technical issues after deployment, including mismatches between front-end behavior and back-end responses, which required quick debugging under time pressure.
- Limited time, energy, and resources With a tight schedule and a small team, balancing development, research, design, and testing within the given timeframe was a significant challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We finished the hackathon and still alive
What we learned
- How to deal with crash course
- How to code in traffic
- Adaptability, Team Coordination, and Problem Solving
- Trust your teammates
What's next for RAGAM - Revitalisasi Adat, Gaya, dan Makna
Moving forward, RAGAM is committed to making a real, measurable impact in the preservation and revitalization of Indonesia’s traditional textiles. Our next steps include:
- Collaborating with cultural institutions, local governments, and educational bodies to ensure accuracy, legitimacy, and wider access to knowledge about traditional fabrics
- Expanding the platform’s reach to include more diverse patterns, regions, and ethnic groups across Indonesia
- Launching outreach programs and workshops to engage youth and local communities in heritage-based creativity
- Developing features that connect users with real artisans, enabling digital designs to be physically produced and appreciated
- Seeking long-term partnerships with stakeholders who share the vision of protecting and promoting Indonesian cultural heritage
We believe that by combining technology, education, and collaboration, RAGAM can help ignite a movement of cultural pride and preservation, one pattern at a time.
