Inspiration I’ve always loved the nostalgic charm of Windows XP, and I wanted to bring that same playful energy into my personal portfolio. Instead of going with the usual modern look, I decided to make something different — a portfolio that feels like a desktop from the early 2000s but actually shows off what I can do in 2025. What it does This is my personal website, but styled like an old-school Windows XP interface. You can: Open windows like you're on a real desktop. Explore my projects, resume, and contact info in draggable, resizable windows. Click a Start menu to navigate. Enjoy the nostalgia while still seeing my modern skills in action. How we built it Frontend: React UI: Handcrafted to mimic Windows XP’s look — using pixel fonts, icons, gradients, and borders just like the OG system. Hosting: Deployed to a custom domain (rafiadnan.my.id) and optimized for quick load times. Touch of chaos: Every window is a little unpredictable, just like XP pop-ups in the old days — intentionally quirky. Challenges we ran into Making a window system from scratch (draggable, resizable, closable). Recreating XP’s look while keeping everything responsive. Making sure it works well on both desktop and mobile without ruining the vibe. Accomplishments that we're proud of It’s not just a portfolio — it’s an experience. Managed to balance humor, nostalgia, and functionality. Built the whole thing from scratch, no UI kits or templates. What we learned Sometimes going against the trend (in this case, modern minimalism) pays off. UI/UX doesn’t always have to be serious — it can be fun and still functional. How to mimic desktop environments in web development. What's next for rafiadnan.my.id Adding fun Easter eggs Making the Start Menu even more interactive. Letting users change themes (XP, Win98, or even Vista). Adding a “minigame” window — maybe Minesweeper or a tiny shooter. Making it open source so others can remix or learn from it.
