Inspiration
As four girls currently in our senior year of high school, we understand the pressures of school and work, so the site can be catered to people in high school too. But overall, we hope our website can be useful for those who may feel stressed or pressured in their daily lives. We wanted to make an interactive website that engages individuals and encourages wellness and habits to improve daily moods.
What it does
On our homepage, we give a brief overview on the issue of mental health and how/why it impacts women and gender minorities, which serves to educate users on the topic. To learn more or even receive free guidance and support for their mental health, users can also navigate to the Resources tab, which has various books, podcasts, and other wellness resources.
Our website features a fully functional mood tracking calendar, which allows users to plan out events and track their mood. Planning can often be a great way to reduce anxiety about the future, and if they do have uncomfortable feelings about events, they can track that as well. The calendar includes a feature to click on a day to add an event and displays the time stamp, with an option to delete the event once completed. Users can add as many events as needed and on any desired day!
Additionally, our self care quiz assesses the user’s current mood and wellbeing based on their answers, outputting suggestions on what they should do to either uplift or maintain their mental state. These suggestions allow users to improve their mood and help them lead a good lifestyle and promote better mental health!
How we built it
Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, we developed Radiant Reflections on Replit. We also used some open source code to add minor embellishments to the website.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges we ran into included the more technical aspects of building the website. Since we used three different languages on the website, connecting each aspect to meet formatting needs was difficult as we wanted to ensure the message of the website came through on each webpage.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One accomplishment our team is proud of is making our website not just informational and a tool to educate about mental health, but also making it engaging and interactive for users to improve their daily mood with a hands-on quiz and calendar. We also enjoyed collaborating as a group and working together to make sure each piece of the website connected together to meet our essential goal of educating on and improving mental health. In addition, adding the scrolling effects on the homepage took time and we’re proud about it, even though it's a smaller feature of the website!
What we learned
By picking our topic on mental health and through extensive research as to how the issue affects women and gender minorities, we realized that the problem was even more extensive and dire than we thought; this further reinforced our commitment to our website and our mission as a whole, making us more passionate about the subject.
Through developing our website, we also learned more about the technical elements that go into the final result; we had thought of different features that would be nice to have, and along the way we researched and learned how to execute our vision!
What's next for Radiant Reflections
Going forward, we would like to add a page on connecting users to other users in order to build a community where everyone is helping everyone improve their mental health. We would also like to add a feature where users get points as incentives for taking self care quizzes and engaging in different wellness activities to encourage users to help themselves and to motivate others. Additionally, we would like to turn this project into an app as well to further make our website more accessible to users.
