Inspiration

We love raccoons and thought little astronaut raccoon would be cute.

What it does

Raccoonaut’s Expedition is a website designed to visualize our solar system in orbit. It is an accelerated simulation modelled to showcase the relative size of the planets, as well as the speed at which they rotate around the sun. Through the assistance of a raccoon-astronaut, our site mascot, we also provide some brief information relevant to the clicked-upon planet.

How I built it

The base of this mini-simulation is programmed in HTML, CSS, and JS. Animations are created with the help of external Javascript languages, GSAP and ANIME.JS. These stunning graphics are made through the DOM rather than the Canvas. All elements are created by the team from scratch; the solar system’s SVGs are hard-coded, with the exception of our little Raccoonaut. A solar system API is used to grab planet data.

Challenges I ran into

Tweaking Javascript animations to look just right!

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Composing a cohesive site that looks aesthetically pleasing.

What I learned

Learning new libraries to assist our webdev and design skills!

What's next for Raccoonaut's Expedition

We'd love to implement more planets and animations to truly immerse users in an outer-space expedition.
