Our inspiration for this project was that our team members all know about the struggle of growing up worrying about food. And yet, these companies waste so much food every single day that could feed so many people. So we made this app to try and solve the problem.
Raccoon Treasure connects local businesses with food that is about to expire to individuals who are in need of extra food in their homes. The businesses are then able to give away their unsellable food to those who need it; therefore, eliminating a lot of unnecessary food waste in the country, which is quite a prevalent problem to the world's health.
We made our app on a website called "Thunkable.com", where we designed and coded our app with block code. We also drew our own logo on an Ipad.
One challenge that we ran into at first was that none of us had used block code for quite some time, so there was some trial and error until we felt as if we had a good grasp on how to use the code. There were also a few times when our power plug got accidentally unplugged and we lost a lot of progress. But we got it all done eventually after a long night and we are proud of our work.
One thing that we are proud of is how versatile our app is. It can be used by businesses anywhere, which means that fewer people around the world will go hungry. Our logo is also pretty cute so we're also quite proud of it and our designer.
One thing that we learned is how big the thought process must be for something to be released publically. One example in our project is we had to make sure we wouldn't break any FDA laws and things like that. As well as incentives to get the big companies to donate their food instead of just throwing it away.
What we're planning on doing next is expanding our app into it's own business that works with local food donation places like 'Feeding America' and businesses to be able to expand our reach on how many people we can feed.
