Description

Raccoon Ring is a 2D platformer game fused with narrative and storytelling elements. Featuring a young traveler, YOU, who happens to stumble across the surprisingly strong, alluring scent of cotton candy coming from a dangerous tower ... will you be able to escape once you're inside, hypnotized by the attractive scent?

Soundtrack Boss Battle Cutscene Playthrough ^^ Please watch if you rage-quit on the levels!

Inspiration

The player character design & sprites are based off of Cave Story, an indie 2D platformer with a really cute artstyle and the Boss Fight scene was inspired by an internet meme where a raccoon tries to wash a cotton candy in a puddle, only to realize that it would dissolve.

What it does

Parkour-style movement (wall jumps and sprint) with a tricky obstacle course in each level.

How we built it

Through endless hours spent on coding, debugging, and testing out new themes, ideas, and features, we have:

  • Learned how to utilize a variety of nodes (parent and child nodes)
  • Design challenging yet enjoyable levels
  • Coded for player mechanics, including wall jumps, sprints, and inverting gravity
  • Play tested our level profusely, making sure that it is possible to beat.
  • Coded moving platforms and accounted for the void / death spikes
  • Written original pieces of music in largely the A minor key

Challenges

None of us had ever stepped foot into the realm of game development before this Game Jam, so even building the basic mechanics such as player movement was new and stressful. Our initial ideas for the game were also highly ambitious and thus to be scaled back greatly as we underestimated the duration of the debugging process.

Accomplishments

We not only managed to push through all the difficulties and challenges but also surprise ourselves with what we were capable of accomplishing as a team. Although our first project may be a little scuffed, it is our first attempt after all and we are all proud of what we have created. We were able to create a viable platformer game with great assets and design in only seven days.

What we learned

Having minimal knowledge of Github and Godot, we walked into this project not having a clear idea of what to expect. Through this project we learnt not only the basics of Godot and the functionalities of Github, but also how to work together as a new team amongst familiarizing ourselves with all sorts of applications.

The four of us grew together, learning how to strategize, how to plan ahead, how to set our own commitments and deadlines, and the importance of communication (especially when it comes to pushing and pulling in Github).

What's next

In the future, we plan to incorporate a third level to the tower, as we do have three raccoons in our boss fight cutscene. The third level would have a combination of the obstacles in the first and second levels, making it more difficult and more rewarding. As a result, the boss fight cutscene will be moved from after level 2 to after level 3.

Additionally, we plan to add more features to our game. Right now we have: moving platforms, inverting gravity jumppad, and spikes. We hope to add checkpoints in each level, more food items, and maybe incorporate more elements resembling that of a dungeon crawler.
