Inspiration
During one of our usual dinners, we chanced upon the conversation of mental health in Singapore. Jia Yi, majoring in social work, shared her insight on how awareness remains low despite constant efforts from organisations to tackle mental health issues and shared on her recent client who faced strong stigma from society due to her mental health condition. This piqued the interest of all the other members, and motivated us to sign up for this hackathon. Jasmine and Angele shared the ideas of how their coding skills could help innovative ideas stay relevant while Pearline contributed marketing ideas as well.
What it does
The application helps to alleviate eating disorders by inculcating and bringing to awareness of better eating habits and to debunk social beauty standards (a leading cause for eating disorders). These are targetted in 5 different components that will tie in together providing a holistic aid in combatting eating disorders in Singapore. (More information is provided on Github and our report)
How we built it
We used the React framework in the Expo Development Server.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to collaborate with one another and persevered despite the pressing deadline. We also included a PDF document of our fully developed report, providing a research based causal analysis of the current eating disorder scene in Singapore. In this document, we also included an in-depth description of our application as well as the functions of the different components. Furthermore, we managed to achieve more functions on our application than we had initially intended for.
What we learned
Mindfulhacks was definitely challenging in many ways. Even with a team full of the right people and skills, there were many obstacles that we had to conquer to complete the hackathon. Our lesson learnt is that preparation is truly key. Even though we anticipated the marathon of work, we had team mates who did not have experience with coding. This definitely proved to be a challenge as we struggled to keep them up to date with our progress. Spending time on planning and addressing various issues could’ve been avoided if we worked on it prior to the hackathon. However, this experience truly got us familiarised with the various softwares and even github, whilst introducing the others to software development which was truly enriching. Hence, we all managed to learn a lot from Mindfulhacks 2021.
What's next for RabbEAT
We plan to continue the development of RabbEAT and hopefully collaborate with other platforms as mentioned in our report.
