Inspiration
Music and entertainment deserve an experience that feels as natural and immersive on a television as they do on any other device. We created Raag TV with a vision of bringing Indian music, cinematic storytelling, and entertainment together in a premium, big-screen experience.
The name Raag reflects the emotional depth and diversity of Indian musical traditions. Our ambition is to combine that cultural richness with modern streaming technology and an interface designed specifically for television—not simply stretch a mobile or web experience onto a larger screen.
As television platforms evolve, we also see an opportunity to make entertainment applications more responsive, accessible, reliable, and intelligent through better platform integration.
What it does
Raag TV is a television-first music and entertainment experience designed around cinematic presentation, intuitive discovery, and remote-control navigation.
Our product experience focuses on:
- Premium big-screen design: A distinctive visual identity and cinematic presentation built for television viewing.
- TV-first navigation: An interface designed for directional remotes, clear focus states, and comfortable navigation from the sofa.
- Content discovery: A structured experience for browsing entertainment and finding content.
- Immersive playback: A dedicated playback experience designed around the needs of television viewers.
- A foundation for smarter entertainment: An architecture that can evolve toward improved playback continuity, content deep links, and supported platform-level integrations.
Our goal is to make the experience feel purpose-built for the television, rather than like a conventional application running on a TV.
How we built it
We approached Raag TV as a product, not just a collection of screens. The application combines a television-oriented interface, content discovery, navigation, and playback into a unified experience.
Our development priorities include:
- Designing layouts and interactions for large screens and directional remotes.
- Building reusable interface components and consistent visual patterns.
- Connecting the experience to the application's content and playback systems.
- Evaluating platform-specific requirements rather than assuming every TV operating system behaves identically.
- Exploring official Amazon documentation, development tools, and reference implementations to identify opportunities to improve compatibility, reliability, and performance.
For the Amazon AppDev challenge, our engineering focus is on evaluating how Raag can take advantage of the capabilities available on the relevant Amazon TV platforms while preserving its own product identity.
Challenges we are tackling
Building a high-quality television experience involves challenges that are easy to overlook in mobile and web development.
Remote navigation: Every important action must be reachable and predictable using a directional remote. Focus management, scrolling, dialogs, and back navigation must work together.
Platform differences: Fire OS and Vega OS have different platform requirements. Shared application logic must not be confused with platform-specific APIs, SDKs, or integrations.
Playback reliability: A polished player is only useful when real media loads correctly and playback states, seeking, buffering, and error recovery behave as expected.
Performance: Large-screen artwork, content rows, transitions, and playback must remain responsive on the actual target devices.
Integration without unnecessary complexity: Platform capabilities should be added only when they are supported, valuable to viewers, and compatible with the existing application.
These challenges guide our approach: investigate first, implement selectively, and verify behavior on the appropriate platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed Raag TV around a distinct product identity and a television-first experience rather than treating the TV as an afterthought.
Key areas of our work include:
- Establishing a recognizable visual identity for Raag TV.
- Developing a dedicated big-screen interface and remote-oriented interaction model.
- Bringing content discovery and playback together in a unified entertainment experience.
- Building a foundation that can be evaluated and improved against the requirements of different TV platforms.
- Identifying a practical path toward deeper platform integration without sacrificing the application's existing design.
We see this project as an opportunity to improve a real product through evidence-based engineering, not simply to produce a hackathon demonstration.
What we learned
This project reinforces an important lesson: building for television requires more than making an interface look good on a large display.
Remote navigation, focus behavior, device performance, playback lifecycle, platform compatibility, and system-level integration all contribute to the quality of the experience.
We are also learning to distinguish between a capability demonstrated in a sample application and one that is genuinely available to our application in a production environment. Official documentation, source-code inspection, targeted testing, and measured results are essential to making the right technical decisions.
What's next for Raag TV
Our next steps are to validate the application against the relevant Amazon platform requirements, identify the highest-value engineering improvements, and test them on supported devices or development environments.
We plan to prioritize reliable playback, predictable remote navigation, performance, platform-specific compatibility, and content-launch integrations where eligibility and technical support are confirmed.
Our long-term vision is for Raag TV to become a premium, adaptable entertainment experience for the big screen—one that combines the richness of Indian music and storytelling with the reliability and usability people expect from modern streaming applications.
Our principle is simple: preserve what makes Raag distinctive, use the platform capabilities that genuinely help, and verify every improvement that reaches our viewers.
