Inspiration
3 of us are children of immigrants, and when we were presented with the topics, we instantly gravitated toward food preservation. In our diverse family backgrounds, we all related to the fact that in immigrant households, wasting food is considered a mortal sin—only punishable by death. Although Jailyn wasn’t raised by immigrants, she did grow up in Delaware. You may know that Delaware is the second smallest state in the U.S., but what you might not know is that it ranks among the top 20 states that waste the most food. The U.S. wastes about 30-40% of its food production, which equals $218 billion in wasted food every year—that’s over $800 per household.
What it does
Through our decisions and brainstorming sessions, we decided to build a mobile app that will digitize your fridge, primarily by scanning your grocery receipts. By digitizing your fridge, we’ll be able to give you reminders—whether it’s to eat that apple that got pushed to the back of your fridge or to consider donating that unopened bag of chips sitting deep in your pantry before it expires. And lastly, you’ll never have to guess when your produce is ripe because, through the use of AI and machine learning, we’ve developed a way to tell you exactly when that tomato on your counter is RIPE.
