Inspiration
Our team discovered a mutual interest in embroidery, and we wanted to create a vessel to help people looking for a new activity or creative outlet to explore embroidery! The thread design was inspired by the Lemonade 2019 Giveback page, which had a super dynamic animation tracing down the page. We tried to implement a scaled down version of that dynamic path.
What it does
Our website highlights the best parts of r/Embroidery--the opportunities to learn, connect, and create-- and frames the subreddit as a beginner-friendly resource to begin learning about embroidery.
How we built it
Elizabeth made a lofi mockup in Figma, Jiho worked on the backend, and once the mockup was complete with a color palette and defined headers, Amanda worked on the frontend!
Challenges we ran into
For the design, it was difficult to figure out what I referred to as "squiggles," aka the thread graphic. It was time consuming and finicky to make the curves look dynamic and natural, but it was really gratifying in the end. For implementing the design, we struggled with resizing the page for different screens, partially because all of the squiggles were just lifted as images and added to the page. The navigation is a bit wonky as well.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I think we were super proud to get a somewhat finished website out in time for the first deadline! I personally was really happy with the little hoop icon I made in Figma, in the top left corner of the page, and was especially excited when I found a color scheme that looked nice.
What we learned
Figma was a whole new domain for me (Elizabeth) and I really loved learning about design concepts in the workshops and actually getting to implement them for our own project!
What's next for Exploring Embroidery
Hopefully we'll finish up the mobile version and fix up the resizing/navigation issues.
