Inspiration

We started off thinking about how one could broaden their horizons (not in the literal sense) and we wanted to explore different cultures through the stories they've told in the past.

What it does

It allows the user to discover a selection of stories, with visuals from the different cultures. They can read through the stories and we hope that it inspires a desire to explore these stories more.

How we built it

We first created separate .html files in a templates folder and then created the visuals for those separately using separate .css files, including one layout for a story as an example. Finally, using Flask, we combined them and refactored our code so that the layout for one story could be reused, saving us some time and making the code less cluttered and reducing debugging needs.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating the CSS files and image files into Flask was a struggle as we didn't realise at that point that we needed to use a special type of reference using Jinja. Additionally, we faced issues with href and @app.route not working in sync (href redirects to a webpage with the /the html you're going to, but the routes in app.py didn't reflect this. Finally, converting the example template into a generic layout that could be used for all stories using Jinja was a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The visual elements for a lot of the stories and the portal were something that we're very proud of. Additionally, I think the way we summarised the story gave enough of the key details but still left enough details out the make the reader curious about the real story. I think we struck a good balance here!

What we learned

I think we became a lot more familiarised with how to use Git and GitHub through our regular use of it during this project, starting off with little knowledge as most of our members didn't have accounts. Additionally, we've become a lot more used to using Flask to make websites, also coming from limited experience here.
