Inspiration
Initially, we joined HackTX because we heard it would be a lot of fun. However, we had no clear project idea in mind and, suddenly, it was the day of HackTX. Amidst the rush of registration, getting food, and talking to sponsors, we still needed to come up with an idea for our hack. Our group brainstormed several ideas, eventually deciding to create Quotes from Shrek Website, saving the other ideas for another day. We thought this would be a really good project since first, it was one of the simpler ideas to implement, which was good because 3/4 of the group members are first-time hackathoners, and, second, we knew we would have a lot of fun making it.
What it does
Quotes from Shrek Website allows the user to communicate with Shrek through an interactive button interface, disguised as his teeth. The user can tell Shrek that they feel sad, angry, happy, or that they just want a random quote from Shrek. Based on the user's choice, Shrek will provide the user with an appropriate quote and, hopefully, make their day better.
How we built it
We built this using HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
Most of the time was spent deciding to work on this idea. We had so many other ideas but scrapped them due to inexperience and time constraints. We also are struggling with managing the HTML/CSS layout, but we will figure it out! We also struggled with the time constraint. Most of us are not used to programming a project in a smaller time span.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the humor we incorporated into the project. We've kept the team setting light-hearted and fun. Also, for some of us, this was our first introduction to web development, so being able to learn the basics of it is a big accomplishment.
What we learned
We are learning a lot about web development and how to work in a team setting.
What's next for Quotes from Shrek Website
We need to implement the functionality of Shrek responding to the user. As of right now, we only have the basic layout of the website.
As of right now, we have implemented all of our current ideas.
