Inspiration

Learning quantum computing right now sucks. You spend hours fighting broken Python versions, fixing NumPy/Qiskit dependency errors in Jupyter, or hitting paywalls on enterprise cloud platforms. Most students quit before running a single quantum gate.

I built Quortup so anyone can open a link, drag gates on a circuit wire, see the 3D Bloch sphere move, and simulate algorithms in seconds for free.

What it does

  • Drag-and-Drop Circuit Builder: Place H, X, Y, Z, CNOT, and Toffoli gates. Statevector amplitudes and measurement histograms update live.
  • 3D Bloch Sphere: Three.js interactive sphere showing superposition and phase rotations geometrically.
  • Real Qiskit Backend: Compiles and executes against a Python Qiskit Aer backend with configurable shot counts.
  • Quanta AI Agent & Code Explainer: Explains algorithm mechanics (Grover oracle, VQE ansatz) and breaks down Qiskit syntax line-by-line.
  • Student Access & Capstones: Verified certificates for finishing hands-on capstone projects, completely free for students.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, and Three.js (for 3D Bloch sphere rendering).
  • Backend: FastAPI with Python and Qiskit Aer running on Render.
  • AI: Gemini API for the interactive quantum copilot.
  • Auth & Deploy: Firebase Auth; static frontend deployed on Netlify at quortup.com with /api/* routed to Render.

Challenges we ran into

  • Matrix Math in Browser: Calculating 2^n statevectors during drag events caused UI stutter. We optimized it by running 1-3 qubit calculations locally in JS and offloading larger circuits to the backend.
  • Bundle Limits: Qiskit, PyTorch, and SciPy blew past standard 250 MB serverless limits (over 6 GB). We solved this by hosting the Python runtime in a Docker container on Render while keeping the frontend static on Netlify.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a sub-second, interactive quantum circuit simulator that runs entirely in the browser.
  • Shipped a working production platform at quortup.com.
  • Integrated visual 3D statevectors with real Qiskit execution.

What we learned

  • How quantum gates transpile down to unitary matrices under the hood.
  • Decoupling heavy scientific Python runtimes from snappy React frontends.

What's next for Quortup: Learn, Build & Simulate Quantum Computing with AI

  • Queueing student jobs to physical IBM Quantum hardware backends.
  • Interactive modules for Quantum Machine Learning (QML) and VQE chemistry simulations.
