Inspiration

Our inspiration for this project stems from the over-reliant relationship students have with practice exams from past semesters. As helpful as they are, multiple students would like to have more practice to assess their understanding of the course material. Quizzler solves this problem by leveraging the power of AI to generate exam questions from the user's input.

What it does

Quizzler's main feature is AI-generated practice exams. The student can input a text which can come from any source, such as lecture notes or lecture recording transcripts. Then, the user can select the number of questions of each type they want to generate, such as multiple choice questions or true or false questions.

How we built it

Quizzler was built using React on the frontend and Node JS and Express.js on the backend. The user's exams, groups and other informations are stored using Firestore and we use Firebase for authentication.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main problems we ran into was the latency when generating exams, which is due to generation being slow on the OpenAI API side of things. We managed to reduce it by generating fewer questions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the look and feel of our app, which feels clean and fun to use. Also, we are delighted with the quality of the AI generated questions. It mainly comes from the prompts we created for each question type, which were specific enough that the output format of the AI generated exams was consistent.

What we learned

Most of our team members had no prior experience using React, Firebase or Firestore, so they had to learn it on the job.

What's next for Quizzler

With Quizzler, we envision it being integrated with myCourses, since it already contains transcripts from lecture recordings and lecture notes for the student's courses. The practice exams can also be directly linked to the courses the student is taking. Having the app linked to the student's school email makes for a more secure environment. Another thing we would like to improve in the app is groups and sharing of practice exams, but also including a comparison between multiple members of a group on the same exam in terms of performance, number of attempts and more. We believe there is great potential for Quizzler in the future.
