Inspiration

We wanted to bring back the feeling of playing Buzz! with friends: everyone trying to answer first, someone celebrating too early, and the person in last place demanding another game. quizzas started with that idea, adapted for phones so we wouldn’t need to be in the same room to play.

What it does

quizzas is a multiplayer trivia game where you can play with friends in a private room or find opponents through matchmaking. There’s casual play and an eight-player ranked mode for when things get competitive. The rules change between rounds. Sometimes speed matters most; sometimes you can steal points or have to pass a bomb before time runs out. You earn XP, unlock characters and rewards, and work your way up the seasonal leaderboard.

How we built it

We built the app in Flutter, with Rive animations to give the avatars, host, etc and screens some life. The backend runs on Elixir and Phoenix. Each match has its own process on the server, which keeps track of answers, timers, and scores. We use PostgreSQL to save content and player progress, and Fly.io to host the backend. We also built an admin panel to write questions, manage translations, set up seasons without having to release a new app version, etc etc Everything was built with the help of claude code and codex. And yep, RevenueCat for the purchase setup, obviously 😅.

Challenges we ran into

I'd say countdown, different round types, animations, etc Countdown sounds simple until several phones need to agree on when it ends. Getting timers, late answers, and reconnects to behave consistently took a lot of care. Different round types made things more interesting—and harder to build. Stealing points needs different rules from answering a question, and passing a bomb introduces turns into a game that usually has everyone playing at once. And yep, animations are fun, but players still need to read the question and understand what to do before the timer runs out so we had to find (still improving) the balance on that.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting a full match working between real devices was a big milestone. Seeing players join, answer, react to the scoreboard, and finish a game made all the separate pieces feel like an actual game. I'm also proud of how much variety I've managed to fit into the rounds, and that friends can play together in different languages.

What we learned

We learned that a round can work exactly as coded and still be confusing to play. The timing of an announcement, a clear instruction, or a sound at the right moment can make a huge difference. And also, even for a simple game there are a loooot of services, variables, etc to take into account if you want to have a solid product.

What's next for quizzas

We want to get quizzas into more people’s hands and see which rounds they enjoy, where they get confused, and what makes them want to play again. For now it is only available in apple ecosystem (iphone, ipad and macOS) but we have everything ready to release it on android. Web and windows are longer-term plans. We'd like to create a shop inside the game where we can launch new assets, avatars, extra exp boosts, etc etc so everyone can buy it. We also plan to launch the "question packs" where everyone can build their own packs to work with friends or even send to review (so it will be available for everyone).
