Inspiration

Our huge passion for gaming inspired us to try game development for the first time, and we sort of liked the challenge of stepping into something completely new and uncharted for us. What better time to try several completely new things than at our first international hackathon.

We were particularly inspired by the celebrations of St. George's Day in Barcelona around the time of HackUPC 2026, which prompted us to bring dragons into the mix!

Alongside that, we took a large interest in the hardware sensors of the phone - and used the accelerometer as a centerpiece for the "Slashing" attack in our game.

What it does

Quizzes 'n' Dragons is a fast-paced quiz game that tests your knowledge on topics like Math, History, Biology, Pop Culture and others. You fight against one person in a battle of wits - 5 rounds, 5 different topics, 7 questions per round and 30 seconds to answer them. After each round you attack each other to lower your health, with your base damage being the amount of answers you got right. However, the way you attack is slightly different - you physically gesture a slash at each other using your phones! First to drain the other person's health bar wins - alternatively, if you have more health than the other person at the end of the 5 rounds, you win.

Magical dragons born with magnificent knowledge back you up in your journey for knowledge. The game allows you to select a Dragon to accompany you - this dragon will boost your damage output at the end of the round which held their favorite topic.

How we built it

We used Android Studio, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and GitHub for version control. Alongside some help from AI tools, especially to help us understand and learn all the core principles and good programming and design practices a project like this is based on.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was our lack of knowledge and experience in almost every category needed for this project, however we fully expected that going in - our goal was to try and beat our own expectations and finish the project.

Regardless, it meant that we had to approach everything from scratch - Android Studio, Kotlin and Android app development in general. Our previous Java knowledge helped, although surprisingly very little, in terms of understanding how Kotlin works. To put it simply, the whole project was a giant challenge that we ran into.

One of the surprisingly easier parts of the whole ordeal was networking - it seemed like the toughest, but when it came down to it, programming good UI and good game logic was sometimes even harder.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're most proud of actually seeing this project through, from start to (almost) finish, and making a fully functional game that we can play with our friends and family!

What we learned

We've learned tons, especially in the world of mobile app development and game development. From handling Android Studio and gaining a decent grasp on Kotlin, to the core principles of networking for video games and video game design. The experience of doing this project is invaluable to us.

What's next for Quizzes 'n' Dragons

There's still a lot left, especially in the world of polishing, and a core feature like good audio is missing. Past that, we definitely want to swap all the placeholder art we took off internet for some original art! After that however, there's not much left - a simple game like Quizzes 'n' Dragons should be kept simple.
