Inspiration
Inspired by past work with children, especially Vanspec (a Vancouver Archdiocese program). Also, inspired by CoolMathGames, from personal experience, children enjoy studying with games.
What it does
Quiz dodger is a space invader like game which motivates young learners to do practice problems in a multiple choice format while keeping them engaged. Avoid the watermelons but fear not if you are hit, answer correctly and continue while feeling a sense of success.
How we built it
Our tech stack contained only ReactJS.
Challenges we ran into
The two main challenges we had were how to navigate and use version control and how to change the state of each object in order to trigger a collision. At the beginning we struggled with setting up our project due to differences in devices and had trouble understanding git push, pull and merge. Finally, for our object we had a problem where the state of each object was not updating and therefore no collisions were being triggered.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to work together as a team with minimal conflicts and maximum efficiency. In addition, we are proud that we were able to learn and apply ReactJS the day of the Hackathon.
What we learned
The three main things we were able to learn through HackCamp were how to use version control within a team setting, how to use ReactJS, and using CSS to make animations, background and all visual aspects of our project.
What's next for Quiz Dodger
Ideally, in the future we would like to create different types of quizzes for all subjects, fix some quality of life issues, lagging, implementing being able to choose different sprites, and allowing players to create their own quizzes.
