Inspiration

My journey into software development didn't start in a typical dorm room; it started in a nursery. I became a father while I was still a teenager. While my peers were experiencing traditional campus life, I was balancing diaper changes with textbooks, enrolled in a distance university.

Forced to study remotely, often at odd hours and in short bursts, I became heavily reliant on digital resources. I realized that traditional studying methods weren't enough; I needed efficiency, accessibility, and automation to survive academically. I dreamed of a tool that could adapt to my chaotic schedule, not the other way around.

Quizdy is the manifestation of that dream—it is the tool I wish I had when I was fighting for my degree.

What it does

Quizdy is more than a simple trivia game; it is a comprehensive AI-powered Exam Preparation Companion. It transforms passive study materials into active learning sessions, allowing users to:

  • Stay in the "Flow" with AI: Ask the AI specific questions about your study material without wasting time setting the context. The AI already understands what you are studying, allowing you to resolve doubts instantly without breaking your concentration.
  • Generate Tests Instantly: Input topics, raw text, or simply upload a text file, PDF, or even an audio or video file, and let the AI generate exam-style questions automatically.
  • Study Offline: Built for the commuter and the remote learner, it works perfectly without an internet connection.
  • Break Language Barriers: Fully supports 13 languages, making education accessible globally.

How we built it

We chose Flutter to ensure a seamless, native experience across all platforms (Mobile, Web, and Desktop) with a single codebase.

  • Core Framework: Flutter for cross-platform UI rendering.
  • Architecture: We implemented a rigorous Clean Architecture to ensure scalability, testability, and code maintainability.
  • AI Integration: We leveraged Generative AI APIs to parse educational content and output structured Q&A formats.
  • Offline Capability: We utilized a robust local database solution to guarantee full functionality when disconnected, syncing only when necessary.

Challenges we ran into

  • AI Accuracy (Prompt Engineering): Fine-tuning the AI to generate meaningful, academic questions rather than hallucinated facts was a significant hurdle. We had to iterate on the prompts extensively.
  • The "Offline-First" Promise: Ensuring that an AI-heavy app could still provide value when disconnected was tricky. We had to build robust caching and local fallback strategies.
  • Responsive UI: Making the study interface intuitive on both a small phone screen and a large desktop monitor required careful UI/UX planning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The code is solid, but our greatest achievement is human. We are incredibly proud to see this tool being adopted by the very same distance university where I once struggled as a student.

It has come full circle:

  1. Students are using it to prepare for difficult exams using the shared resources.
  2. Professors are actively using the AI features to generate question banks for their courses.

Knowing that my code is helping a new generation of students—some of whom might be facing their own difficult circumstances—is the biggest win of all.

What we learned

  • Empathy drives Innovation: The best features came from strictly remembering the pain points of being a remote student with limited time.
  • AI as a Tool, not a Crutch: We learned that AI works best when it empowers the user to verify and learn, rather than just giving answers.
  • Flutter's Maturity: We confirmed that Flutter is fully ready for complex, data-heavy production apps that require deep native integration.

What's next for Quizdy

  • Cloud Sync & Community: Allowing students to share their generated quizzes with classmates instantly.
  • Visual & Structured Learning: Going beyond Q&A, we are building tools to auto-generate diagrams, summaries, and split complex content into manageable sections.
  • Syllabus Mastery Tracking: A dedicated dashboard where students can visualize exactly what percentage of the syllabus they have mastered, giving them a clear data-driven view of their exam readiness.
